Brain Awareness Week 2017

On the last weekend of May 2017, several of our laboratory members volunteered in NNI’s inaugural Brain Awareness Week campaign. The campaign was held at Tampines Hub and was graced by the presence of Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat. The first of its kind in the heartlands, the Brain Awareness Week aims to educate the public on various neurological disorders, their signs and symptoms and precautionary measures to mitigate its onset or progress – knowledge that is increasingly relevant in our ageing society. In addition to educational booths, on-site memory and locomotive screening tests were also available and mass exercise sessions were conducted.

With the help of some simple games, our laboratory members shared with the public about Parkinson's Disease (PD) and our laboratory's pursuit of effective PD treatments.

Not only was this campaign a good exposure for the public to understand the translational possibilities of our laboratory's pursuits, it was also a good opportunity for us to get in touch with the community that we aspire to positively impact. We hope that the attendees were inspired to lead a healthy lifestyle and on top of that, show their support for the fledging research field in Singapore.
